Why wouldnt you just use a wool blanket?

If you have ever put a wool blanket directly on the ground you may find the canvas layer pretty nice. Also the handles look helpful. That being said, this is just a wool blend. I agree with the other user about just making your own with good wool.

How wide is this when used for sleeping, folded over your body?

It does not unfold to cover your body.

What is this exactly? Is it like a sleeping bag or a blanket?

Neither, it’s a durable waxed canvas “tarp” that has a inner liner of wool sowed in that you could simply lay on so that your not laying in direct soil/grass. It acts as a barrier between your sleeping bag/blanket and the ground.
