Twelve-year-old Crow has lived her entire life on a tiny, isolated piece of the starkly beautiful Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts. Abandoned and set adrift in a small boat when she was just hours old, Crow’s only companions are Osh, the man who rescued and raised her, and Miss Maggie, their fierce and affectionate neighbor across the sandbar. Crow has always been curious about the world around her, but it isn’t until the night a mysterious fire appears across the water that the unspoken question of her own history forms in her heart. Soon, an unstoppable chain of events is triggered, leading Crow down a path of discovery and danger. Vivid and heart-wrenching, Lauren Wolk’s Beyond the Bright Sea is a gorgeously crafted and tensely paced tale that explores questions of identity, belonging, and the true meaning of family. What makes a family?
This one is sweet. It's kind of a parable for appreciating what you have, but is also a pretty scary adventure for a kid's book. Set in the late 1920's on a small group of islands off the coast of Massachusetts. this book focuses on Crow, Osh and Miss Maggie. When she was just hours old, Crow washed up to Osh's island in a battered old dinghy. He took her in and kept her as his own. With the help of Miss Maggie, she has grown in to a lovely young 12 year old girl. But aside from her adoptive family, Crow is kept at arms' length by the rest of the islanders, because while noone knows where she came from, it could be from the leper colony across the way. Crow decides that while she loves Osh, she wants to know about her "real" family. And throughout the book, she learns that her real family is maybe the one that's always been there.

Beautiful Book Full of Wonderful Characters and a Compelling Story
A wonderfully crafted novel set in the Elizabeth Islands off the coast of Massachusetts in the 1920's. Crow came to the island as a newborn baby, set adrift in a tiny skiff and launched into the sea. Taken in by Osh, the only man living on the small island where her skiff comes to rest, she grows up wondering about her past. She is happy with her life, with Osh and Miss Maggie who lives across the sandbar in nearby Cuttyhunk Island but most islanders keep away from her, fearing she might be from Penikese which not long before had been a leper colony. This fear and rejection leads Crow into deeper digging about what secrets are held in her past. As Crow finds out answers to these secrets, danger comes closer and closer to her beloved island and to the people she holds dear. I was a big fan of Lauren Wolk's previous novel, Wolf Hollow and she did not disappoint with Beyond the Bright Sea. The characters are wonderfully developed and the setting is vibrant, wild and beautiful. She is a master storyteller and I look forward to other books in the future.

A Terrific Read for Any Age from Pre-teen through Adult.
I bought the book for my grandson because I liked the author's previous book and because of the good reviews. I make it a point to read all the books I get for him because a) I like literature for young people and b) we enjoy sharing our views on the books. He gets "first read" most of the time. And he sped through this book -- a definite sign of approval. When I picked it up, I found out why he was so excited; I couldn't put it down either. It would be unfair to discuss the book beyond what you will have already seen in the Amazon listing. The story is rich in detail and will keep the reader guessing and hoping. (There is, however, one exception, but it won't be a spoiler. I could sense throughout the book that the author was considering an alternate ending to the story, a slight thread that wasn't tied off. It didn't need tying -- the story is complete as is -- but there is a possibility of a sequel now, one that deals with that other possibility. I hope there is one.)

Beautiful, lyrical, meaningful
I loved every page of this book. The writing is so lyrical it almost floats, and yet the setting and actions are as grounded as the ramshackle cabin where twelve-year-old Crow lives. Issues of identity, family, history, bigotry, decency, and sacrifice are so deftly woven into the story that they're inseparable from the plot itself. Not every question I had about the adult characters' backgrounds was answered, but it didn't matter. What matters in this book are the connections among people who love each other. I had read Wolf Hollow and looked forward to reading Beyond the Bright Sea, and I was not disappointed. This is a beautiful book.

Magical Writing
Another wonderful story I'm honored to review. I expected it to be good because I could not find one review that didn't like it, but what I didn't expect was to find it capturing my heart so close. Wow. I'm by no means an islander, nor live near one, but I have roots in GA and FL. Now, even though these two states can not truly compare to Massachusetts or life in the early 1900"s, there is lots of ocean and lots of dreams made on their shores. As I read this story, it brought back so many memories of good times with my family. We would stay on the shores for weeks at a time. I've always said there are two things in life a person MUST do before they die: see the sun and moon rise on the horizon, and ride in a boat on the ocean. There are no words that can describe those things unless they come from an artist...I believe Lauren Wolk is not just an author, but also an artist. THX :-)

What a fantatic book
I really ennoyed this book as it was an easy read but with a fantastic story. One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was the descriptions, they really got me hooked onto the book. The story was clearly well thought through and you could tell, when everything fit into place. Crow is a really well thought through character that i think everyone can relate to. The fact this book is written in first person really helped me feel like i was in Crow's position. I think Beyond The Bright Sea has a fantastic mix of different genres which makes it a great book for anyone to read. Overall I think it is a really fantastic book and I really enjoyed reading it. :)

What an amazing book!
What an amazing book!! From the moment I started reading it I knew that this book was going to hold a part of my heart between its pages. The style of writing is very simple yet it makes an impact. The important lesson that comes across in this book is how sometimes we need to know and come in terms with our past to finally move on.
