Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine is beautifully bright, pale lemon in the glass. Pink grapefruit, passion fruit, frangipani, and pineapple aromas wow the senses. Full of flavour, balanced by mouth-watering and a fresh, zesty finish. The grapes were selected from vineyards in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley and the neighbouring Awatere Valley. Fast draining, alluvial loams over gravelly sub soils in these valleys provide ideal growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc. Individual blocks were targeted for their strengths and overall contribution to the blend. The vines ranged in age from 18 months to 15 years bringing a mix of youthful vigour and depth of flavour. Summer 2018 was delightful, with heat summation marginally above the long term average and lots of beautiful sunny days. Notably however, the mean daily temperatures during mid-summer were below the long-term average, providing an idyllic sunny and dry growing environment, without excessive heat. Marlborough was fortunate to receive intermittent rainfall throughout the growing season, which warded off the severe drought conditions experienced by much of the country. The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the evening and overnight to preserve flavour and pressed immediately with minimal skin contact. Each block was kept separate throughout the various stages of the winemaking process. Fermentations were carried out at low temperatures and when all tanks had completed fermentation they were proportionately blended, fined, stabilised and bottled.
